Coming to America

On my trip to an assignment on Ellis Island, a group of re-enactors/actors portrayed what immigrants might have felt or saw as they arrived to the land of promise early in the twentieth century. I had so much fun shooting this that I could hardly contain myself. See more images on my website.

For some reason, maybe the body language, this image reminds me of the famous image taken of Jackie Kennedy on Fifth Avenue by Ron Galella. Both images are surprising and catch the essence of the subject while capturing a brief unguarded moment. The similarity of the images is also represented by the glamorous areas of Manhattan. Separated by only 30 blocks or so, both images were taken on Fifth Avenue exiting a fabulous residence.
